who needs luggage anyway?

What a good-natured group this is!

They've had quite the immersion today -- immersion into the entire expanse of Schipol airport in Amsterdam as we ran nearly every millimeter of it to make our connection to Berlin; then immersion into long delays and vague answers at Tegel airport in Berlin about when we might see our luggage (weeks of cancelled flights and weather problems mean that we are way down the list), immersion into a Germany that feels and looks like a frozen tundra (-7!), and turbo- immersion, sooner than any of us had planned, into the public transportation system and the world of retail.

Many of the students barely made it home to their host families in time to drop their hand luggage before turning right back around and taking subways and commuter rails into town to meet me for some quick underwear and toiletries shopping to get us through the next few days (and the long New Year's weekend) without our luggage.

Everyone was smiling (at least the ones who made it downtown).

I'm proud of and grateful for these intrepid souls I get to share this month with! Will no doubt be memorable to ring in the new year with all of them in less than 24 hours...

(Now if I could just get some hot water in my apartment, I'd be all set...)
