Course Description:

This interdisciplinary course based in magnificent Berlin, Germany, combines German language instruction, close cultural study, service learning, and an authentic home stay experience. While in Berlin you will receive intensive language instruction at Eurocentres Language Institute in the mornings, followed by excursions to various points of local interest in the afternoons. While in Berlin we will also participate in a day of service with a local food bank. On weekends and for several days at the end of our course, we will explore other cultural centers, including Leipzig and Nuremberg, as we continue our study of language and culture in context. You will also have a free weekend to plan as you wish. In our travels we will visit some of Europe's premier art and historical museums and attend theater and concerts. You will have the opportunity to see how people lived in the former East Germany, visit Holocaust memorial sites and learn about Germany's vibrant Turkish community. Course Objectives:

To deepen understanding of contemporary German Culture via:
  • language instruction in an immersion environment
  • homestay experience with a German family and
  • close cultural and historical study (museums, concerts, memorials)
  • service learning


Course Credit:

GERM 231 or 331 (4 credits).  Department credit.


Prerequisites:

GERM 201 or the equivalent
